Imagine being a mother with a newborn infant. Suddenly a bee appears near the baby. Then another. And another. Soon the child is surrounded by a swarm of bees. What to do? According to the legend, the mother of this special child did not panic. She took as a sign that he would become a great ruler. She named him Lalibela, which means “the bees recognize his sovereignty.” The baby grew up to be Emperor of Ethiopia in the late 12th Century and visionary behind the rock-hewn churches of his namesake town.
