If you’ve traveled with Apex field leader Gerald Broddelez, you know he is quite fond of all the creatures he finds in nature. So you may not be surprised to learn that Gerald and his family recently embarked on an ambitious project to turn their garden into a winter sanctuary for the area’s birds, mammals, and insects.
In this video—filmed on location in the Ardennes region of Belgium—Gerald will show us step-by-step how they built an elaborate bird feeder, an artificial den for badgers and foxes, and an inviting insect hotel. It’s really quite fascinating!
Well done Gerald and his family! Love the birds and animals there. And thanks for sharing.
That was great! I’m inspired to try to build one of those bird feeders here (the design would have to be tweaked to either gently accommodate or thwart aggressive white-tailed deer.)
Our Governor put a bounty on the tails of native furry predators, so what few badgers South Dakota still has will have fled, but I hope there are people outside the city who are building protected den options for the raccoons, foxes etc.
Thank you for your post
What a superior idea!! I’m so impressed you accomplished all of the construction in one day!! Amazing. The homes and feeding areas will be most welcome by all of your “friends”. Have a great winter. We just received over a foot of snow in Illinois!! Yuck! Happy winter to the Broddelez family and Bo’s boyfriend also.
